today I was doing a small job in the Lady Bay Area of Nottingham the job was to change a lock on a impressive Victorian house.

The mortice lock fitted was from the 1930’s and had decided to give up working so we had two options refurbish the old existing lock or replace with a brand new deadlock. The customer opted for the brand new version which did mean a little more work to adapt to this door and frame but going that little bit extra did mean the door was more secure and we could have a warranty for the part fitted.
It’s always a pleasure to work with a door if this age as the workmanship and craftsman’s ship is evident from not just the door but it’s furniture (handles etc) what wasn’t so nice was having to chisel against the joint.
I didn’t have to change the latch lock but always nice to get a picture of s nice vintage lock while I’m out and about. The door I was working on what’s the second entrance door the other external door was a bi folding door with cast shot bolts and like the one I was working on had very ornate stained glass.
Don’t you just love the Victorian tiles on the floor and walls?
Once completed I got chatting with the owner who takes part in the Lady Bay open gardens which are in July he also take part in the craft show which is also run in Lady Bay in May.
Lady Bay did until recently have its own master locksmith on its doorstep – old man Cookson was a very knowledgable and skilful master locksmith who I’d meet a few times at his shop located on the Main Street the shop has now been converted to a cafe/coffee bar by all accounts but I’m sure his son is still in the locksmith game although our paths have never crossed, I did get asked recently if I could make up some keys that were marked Cookson which I told him would need done by them or authorisation from them would be needed he did never come back so I’m guessing he tracked him down (he didn’t answer the phone when I rang) and got them done.
Well no bookings for the rest of the afternoon so I’ve just poured a small glass of the red grape & elderflower wine I was kindly given by the Lady Bay home owner after we finished our chat. Cheers!
