I arrived at the property and straight away noticed the black composite door and thought that this was a standard Euro cylinder lock change but as I approached the door it as clear that this wasn’t a Euro lock change as the key hole looked more like a Mortice lock key hole i checked the keys and yep there was a Mortice type key…. that was enough information for me to know this was a ERA Vectis.
ERA made a choice to develop this type of lock for composite doors and although a very good locking system that is very secure it isn’t as easy or as practical as a Euro lock, I mean ok if it’s your home great you may never need to change the lock but for rental properties that should always have locks changed on a regular basis (the more tenants good or bad that could possibly still have a key to a property after leaving is not the best for security or safety) it’s not a easy job – like a Mortice lock the whole unit has to be removed and changed and they are not the cheapest in comparison with say a Euro cylinder lock that’s found of most Upvc and composite doors.
Now you can change the backseat/gearbox to a Euro cylinder type but you may also have to change the handles as well…. more cost but it would save you a lot more if you need to change the lock a few times.
I contacted the landlord and asked what he would like to do and advised the cost of all the options, he opted to keep this type of system that was in place – mortice type key so I stripped the door of its handles and removed the multipoint.
Th ERA Vectis comes in two sizes 35mm or 45mm – this one was 45mm but I had both sizes on the van, another odd that I’d forgot about most backseats measure to the centre of the key way/spindle but as you can see in the image below these measure to the far edge of the spindle, don’t ask me why.
Once the security screws were undone the gearbox removed and swopped for the new one it’s just a case of putting everything back on the door and the jobs completed. Let’s just hope that this is the last lock change for the landlord for a while as we all know those landlords hate parting with their money 😀.
